Motivation and Objectives:

The IMS-NoE is a community of 150 European university and industrial partners that facilitates knowledge transfer and dissemination of project results in the area of Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, the next generation of manufacturing systems. To group partners with the same background, the IMS-NoE is divided into 7 Special Interest Groups (SIG). The BWI is the main member of SIG 4, “Benchmarking and Performance Measures of On-line Production Scheduling Systems.” SIG 4 brings together partners from research and industry as well as software vendors to discuss the following topics: Modeling of production systems, online scheduling systems, discrete event simulation, performance measures of production systems at both the strategic and operational level, and enabling technologies. Furthermore, one of the main goals of SIG 4 is to provide the main contribution to the Benchmarking Service that is planned to be developed in cooperation with the other SIG. The Benchmarking Service aims to allow industrial users and researchers to match industrial reality with innovative scheduling solutions. The industrial users submit their scheduling problems to the Web-based Benchmarking Service, and the researchers try to find the best solution for the given problems. To compare the different scheduling solutions, eligible performance measures are provided by the SIG 4.

The following activities have already been completed:

The BWI contributed to all events organized by SIG 4 in Leuven, Budapest, Bergamo, Porto, and Cernobbio. A prototype of the Benchmarking Service has been developed and is accessible at the IMS-NoE Web site
